March deadline approaching

The deadline is fast approaching for lodgement of subclass 186 Employer Nomination Scheme visas via the direct entry provisions for occupations on the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). Legislative changes will mean that these occupations can no longer be nominated via direct entry after March 2018. The exact date is not yet known but is anticipated to be “early March”. 457 visa holders with occupations on the STSOL who applied for their visa after 18 April 2018 will no longer be eligible to apply for permanent residence under the Temporary Residence Transition provisions so this may be their last chance of applying for permanent residence.

These legislative changes will also mean increased nomination fees with the introduction of the Skilling Australians Fund and tougher criteria for 457 visas, including new work experience requirements, increased labour market testing requirements and introduction of a genuine temporary entrant criteria.
